you could try switching the IDE channel you ROM drive is plugged into with the spare channel if your board has one that it. Also you could consider upgrading ur Drive to a SATA DVD-RW drive they are currently seeling for around ú20 GBP not sure on...

Maybe its Cosmic Radiation....or possibly that you PCI card is grounding out, or thre is some weird interference from you ROM drive.....or perhaps your PSU hasn't got enough Wattage to cope with running them simulataniously
